A next step was adding really large amounts of organic material to the area, as the soil was mostly very tightly packed sand, clay and rocks. A donation of wood chip mulch from NYC Parks Department was of great help, as the mulch could be mixed into the soil to improve its structure, or spread on top of the soil to act as a mulch.
